Crafter Interview: Always Midnight

Business Name: Always Midnight
Artist Name: Tess Shebaylo

Describe your business and craft.

Always Midnight creates hair accessories (fascinators, headbands) and brooches that make a bold statement and instantly dress up any outfit. Most of our items are constructed of ribbons, feathers, fabric remnants, and small figurines or mementos. Because life's too short not to overdress.

Rock, paper, or scissors?

Rock, of course.

Where is your favorite place in Richmond and why?

Hollywood Cemetery, because it's got some epic scenery, it's full of the kind of Civil War-era historical goodness that I love, it's close to my house, it's great for walks and picnics, and it affords great views of the river and downtown. I find inspiration there, in the natural setting, the tombstone embellishments, and in the calm feeling you get when you walk through the gates.

Do you have a particular item you want featured? Why this item?

A currently featured item in my shop is the Flaming Rum Punch, which would be perfect to wear to all those holiday parties. So many people comment on this piece and say how much they love it, but when it comes down to it they lack the courage to wear it. What they need to realize is, life is short! BE epic. Wear that epic hair accessory. Just get over your qualms and try it. You just need to get used to seeing yourself in it the way you had to get used to seeing yourself in lipstick, or with that new haircut. Also women have been wearing hair ornaments for centuries up until the past couple of decades, so really it's very of-the-moment and trendy to go bareheaded...a trend I hope will die soon. What's classic and proper is to put something in those tresses and wear it well.

What is your favorite craft tool to work with?

The hot glue gun. It gives me a sense of control in a world full of chaos.
